On Sunday, 7 July 1996, South African Christians gathered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, for the first ever National Day of Prayer. It was just two years after the democratic elections that ended Apartheid, and their hearts were filled with thanksgiving and faith, as they confessed their sins and prayed for reconciliation in their nation. It was a very cold day in Pretoria with ice rain falling on the gathering. Nobody complained. Believers stood shoulder-to-shoulder, hand-in-hand and knelt together as they prayed in Jesus’ Name for God to have mercy on South Africa.
