PRAY

Prayer is so simple that the feeblest child can pray, yet it is at the same time the highest and holiest work to which man can rise. It is fellowship with the Unseen and Most Holy One. – Andrew Murray .

Since the day of Pentecost, the gospel spread from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Church history recorded the faith and perseverance of believers through the past almost 2000 years. It sheds light on the persecution and obstacles believers faced, how they responded to it, what lessons they learned and how God revealed Himself to every generation. 

Salvation in Jesus Christ is both instantly and a process. The instant part is eternal salvation. The Holy Spirit uses the gospel message or the Word, to convict a person of sin, of the need for a Saviour and of the hope of eternal life. The soul of a person responds. The mind hears the gospel and understands the message. The heart or conscience is awakened to repent of sin through confession. The will responds by deciding to turn away from sinful ways, to accept Christ as Lord and Saviour, and to follow Him in a definite lifestyle choice. A person is born-again by the Spirit, adopted into the family of God, and receives eternal life.

The new believer is a spiritual baby that needs to grow and mature until the image of Christ is formed on the inside (Gal.4:19). Like a baby, the believer needs milk and food. Reading and studying the Bible, personally and with other believers, makes the inner spiritual man grow. The Holy Spirit oversees this process by continually convicting, teaching, and disciplining the new believer, until the nature of Jesus Christ in imprinted on his or her life. This is sanctification.

In 1836, Edward Mote wrote the famous hymn, On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand. Our faith in Jesus Christ rests not on our own imagination, but on God’s revelation of Himself in the Bible. Through the ages, the Church battled against forces that wanted to derail that faith. Time and again, they had to reaffirm what they believed. Some even lost their lives in their stand for truth. Today, there is a similar attack, not only on our faith, but on God Himself. The only way that the Church can survive is to allow the Holy Spirit to build us as the temple of the Lord, firmly founded on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself as the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20-21).

One of the most mysterious verses in the Bible is Jesus’ words in John 14:23: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” Our hearts are the innermost part of our beings. In Ephesians 3:16-17 Paul prayed that the Holy Spirit will strengthen our inner man so that Christ may dwell in our hearts. The work of the Holy Spirit to cleanse, purify and prepare our hearts to be the home of God, depends on our willingness to die to self and to surrender our will so that Christ may live in us.

Revival is most needed when the hearts of believers are lukewarm towards the things of God; when they lost their passionate love for Jesus, fell in love with the world or the things of the world and seeking pleasure rather than seeking God. It is when believers became entangled in the cares of this life and are not concerned about the salvation of sinners. Revival is when the Holy Spirit awakens our hearts to love Jesus more than ourselves and compels us to love others. In the words of Duncan Campbell: Revival is not a time of religious entertainment. Revival is a going of God amongst his people, an awareness of God laying hold of the community. In revival every service is an inquiry room; the road and the countryside become sacred spots to many when the winds of God blow.

In Revelation 8:3, an angel adds the prayers of believers to the incense that was offered on the golden altar before the throne of God. The prayers of Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Hannah, David, Solomon, the prophets, the apostles, of men and women of God through the ages, are still rising as incense before the throne. So are our own prayers. Let us join our hearts in prayer together with all these believers because our God answers prayer.
